A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck near western Cuba, shaking buildings in Havana and beyond. No injuries or damage have been reported. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred Monday afternoon about 16 miles below the surface in waters just west of the capital. Miami-Dade County officials said they were evacuating several buildings as a precaution, and service for two elevated commuter trains was suspended temporarily. The Oriente fault zone is just off Cuba’s southeast coast and has unleashed damaging past earthquakes, including a 7.7 magnitude quake in January 2020 that caused damage in Cuba and the Cayman Islands.
