The destruction came after rivers of lava flowed toward the ocean over the weekend, forcing officials to knock on doors and urge residents holding out in two evacuated neighborhoods to flee right away.

Lava from the Kilauea volcano has covered at least one well at a geothermal power plant on the Big Island, according to a Hawaii County Civil Defense report. 

White plumes of acid and extremely fine shards of glass billowed into the sky over Hawaii as molten rock from Kilauea volcano poured into the ocean, creating yet another hazard from an eruption that began more than two weeks ago.

Hawaii County officials say the volcano's summit exploded at 4:17 a.m. Some schools are closed following the explosion but there have been no additional evacuations. About 2,000 people living near the fissures spitting lava had already been evacuated.

A new fissure in Hawaii's Puna District sent gases and lava exploding into the air, spurring officials to call for more evacuations as residents waited for a possible major eruption at Kilauea volcano's summit. 

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) - Officials say a new lava fissure has been reported and are ordering more evacuations on Hawaii's Big Island. 

The Kilauea volcano wipes out 26 homes and spews lava hundreds of feet into the air, leaving at least 1,700 evacuated residents unsure how long they will be displaced.
