Top junior Miles Russell is headed to his first U.S. Open. He got the the last spot in a Florida qualifier with the son of Tiger Woods caddying for him. Russell and Charlie Woods are close friends. Russell was one of two 17-year-olds to qualify out of Florida. The other is Giuseppe Puebla, who is No. 2 behind Russell in the American junior rankings. They are among some 700 players competing for 43 spots to play in the U.S. Open next week at Shinnecock Hills. Also getting in was Billy Horschel. Among those missing out is Tony Finau.
Nelly Korda has already shown to be the best in women's golf. Now she has the title she always wanted by winning the U.S. Women's Open. It's the biggest prize on her calendar and it gives her the first two majors of the year. She's the first player since Inbee Park to win the first two legs of the calendar Grand Slam. Korda has been so dominant it's easy to look ahead to the next major. That's in three weeks when the Women's PGA goes to Hazeltine. It's another big course that should suit the 27-year-old American star.
Nelly Korda won the 81st U.S. Women’s Open for her second consecutive major victory. She held off Charley Hull and Gaby Lopez by one shot when her final 2 1/2-foot par putt curled perilously around the cup and finally dropped in. Korda’s first U.S. Open win is the fourth major victory of her career, and she claimed it with a steady 2-under 69 in the final round. But only after her last putt caught the left edge and toured half the circumference of the hole before dropping. Korda made a 9-foot birdie putt on the 17th.
