Authorities in Jordan say that gunmen have opened fire during a funeral at a church in Jordan and killed seven people and wounded 40 others. The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, which is located about 55 miles south of the capital, Amman. Images being broadcast on Jordanian state television show two gunmen who appear to be holding pistols approaching the church and firing shots. A third man who appears to be holding a semiautomatic rifle then appears and opens fire and all three then run toward the church. A government statement said that the attack was “carried out by unknown assailants” but didn't say whether any gunmen were captured or killed.

Defense attorneys for the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk have suggested a 2029 trial date. They say several years are needed to prepare their case. Kirk was a political ally of President Donald Trump who was shot in the neck as he spoke to a crowd of several thousand people at Utah Valley University last year. Defendant Tyler Robinson has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder. An attorney for Kirk’s widow says the defense’s proposal for a 2029 trial is absurd. A state judge held a hearing Friday to consider trial dates but did not make a decision. Prosecutors proposed a trial beginning in January 2028.

State officials say in court filings that the federal government has stopped sharing evidence with Minnesota authorities who are investigating the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal officers. Attorneys for the Justice Department argued this week that it’s within their discretion to decline to share information with state authorities. Minnesota officials sued President Donald Trump’s administration in March for materials they said they needed to investigate the shootings during Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis earlier this year. State prosecutors announced in July that the federal government had begun turning over key evidence in the cases. But Minnesota investigators said the transfer of evidence stopped soon after the July announcement.

Jurors have begun deliberations in the trial of a North Carolina college student 14 years ago. Faith Hedgepeth was a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when she was fatally beaten in her off-campus apartment in 2012. Miguel Salguero Olivares was arrested nine years later. He has pleaded not guilty to murder, rape and burglary charges. Prosecutors say Salguero Olivares was a stranger who killed Hedgepeth in a fit of rage and left his DNA behind. The defense said that DNA could have come from a consensual encounter days earlier.

A retired New York City police detective has been arrested in the road rage killing of a motorist on the George Washington Bridge. Sixty-two-year-old Victor Romero faces murder charges in the death of Koran Irvine. The 46-year-old was found wounded and unconscious in his vehicle Tuesday evening. Irvine was pronounced dead at a hospital. The incident caused significant traffic delays on the bridge that connects Manhattan and Fort Lee, New Jersey. Romero retired from the police department in 2001. Irvine worked for Con Edison, which called the shooting a "senseless act of violence."

Florida has carried out its 18th execution of the year under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ aggressive use of the death penalty in his final term. Seventy-seven-year-old William Reaves was pronounced dead Tuesday evening after a lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke. He was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1986 shooting death of Indian River County Deputy Richard Raczkoski. Reaves was Florida’s eighth prisoner over age 70 to be executed this year in the nation's busiest death chamber. Last year, Florida set a state record with 19 executions for a single year. It's set to tie that mark if another execution is carried out next month as scheduled.
