Forecasters say Hurricane Karina has become a major hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, but poses no immediate threat to land. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Karina gained hurricane status on Sunday and then rapidly strengthened within hours to become a Category 3 major hurricane. Karina currently has top sustained winds of 125 mph. It's located about 960 miles west-southwest of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. While Karina is expected to stay well offshore, it could churn up dangerous surf along the southwest Mexico coastline and the Baja peninsula. Elsewhere in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Lowell is about 1,000 miles southeast of Hawaii and also set to strengthen in coming days.
