Gavin Newsom says the Justice Department is investigating him and his wife, accusing the Trump administration of targeting him for political purposes as he weighs a presidential bid. The full scope of any investigations related to Newsom was not immediately clear. Newsom said in a video posted Monday on X that federal agents in recent days have knocked on the doors of his friends and former employees, and have asked for records. A person familiar with the matter confirmed there are multiple federal investigations into people around Newsom, including one related to his wife’s taxes.
A teenager charged with sexually assaulting and killing his 18-year-old stepsister on a Carnival Cruise ship has surrendered after a federal judge reversed his decision on pretrial release now that the teen is charged as an adult. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami confirmed on Monday that Timothy Hudson is in custody. U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres filed the order to revoke Hudson’s pretrial release last Wednesday, but the order was sealed until Monday afternoon. The judge had ruled in February that the 16-year-old could live with an uncle and be electronically monitored. But after the case was transferred to adult court, prosecutors wanted Hudson in custody. Hudson has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse.

A judge ruled Monday that Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, owners of Jet Set nightclub, could face up to two years in prison if found guilty. The collapse on April 8, 2025, shocked the Dominican Republic, with authorities working for days to rescue people. Prosecutors have accused the Espaillats of trying to intimidate employees. Hundreds, including athletes and politicians, were at the concert when the roof collapsed. Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel was among the victims.

The Alabama Republican Party says U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville will remain the party’s gubernatorial nominee. The party's steering committee rejected an accusation that he has not lived in the state long enough to run for governor. The challenge was filed by Tuberville’s former primary opponent, Ken McFeeters. Tuberville's campaign says tax records show he established residency in 2018. McFeeters has pointed to Tuberville's Florida ties, including a multimillion-dollar beach home. The dispute revives similar accusations raised when Tuberville ran for Senate in 2020.
Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden has been arrested in Houston on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a motor vehicle, according to the Harris County District Clerk’s Office. Harden was arrested at 3:41 a.m. Saturday and booked just before 5 a.m. He posted $100 bond and was released from police custody, according to charging documents. The documents say Harden had a handgun in plain view that was not in a holster. His arraignment is scheduled for June 22, according to the clerk's office website. Harden is listed as a Houston resident in court documents.
