Israel's government has ordered strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs. The strikes on Monday came a day after Israeli ground forces reached their deepest point in Lebanon in 26 years. Hezbollah fired rockets at northern Israel, including near Haifa. The Israeli strikes follow what Israel calls repeated ceasefire violations by the militant group. Large numbers of people have been seen fleeing Beirut’s southern suburbs. The attacks come just before Lebanon and Israel hold talks in Washington. Despite the tensions, Beirut says it is committed to negotiations. The latest conflict has killed thousands in Lebanon and displaced over a million people.

The energy price spike triggered by the Iran war has seeped into the price of bonds that help fund the U.S. government, causing interest rates to climb in ways that are worsening affordability pressures, hampering economic growth and creating a new risk for Republicans in November’s midterm elections. Also, the United States said Monday that it bombed radar and drone sites in Iran after Tehran shot down an American drone over the weekend. Iran then said it launched a strike of its own, and Kuwait reported incoming fire. The nominal ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. has been repeatedly tested with such back-and-forth attacks, even as officials from both countries try to negotiate an end to the war.
Tough-on-crime outsider Aberaldo de la Espriella took the lead in Colombia’s presidential race in the first round of voting Sunday night, setting up a runoff with Iván Cepeda, an ally of Colombia’s outgoing President Gustavo Petro who questioned the results of the election. With no candidate taking an outright majority of Sunday's vote, the election will head to a second round in June. But Cepeda and Petro sowed doubt in the results of the first round, claiming without evidence that hundreds of thousands of votes were manipulated and that foreign actors manipulated the results of the election. Cepeda said he was waiting for electoral authorities to scrutinize the results before accepting the election.

Israel’s air force and artillery have struck areas near a strategic mountain in southern Lebanon. The attacks on Saturday came as fighting continued near the city of Nabatiyeh. Israel's military issued evacuation warnings for over a dozen villages. This follows direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli military officials at the Pentagon. Lebanon's president and prime minister discussed the situation, vowing to intensify efforts to stop Israel's actions. Lebanon's state news agency reported airstrikes near the Beaufort castle, with Israeli troops advancing in nearby villages. Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets at northern Israel. The conflict has caused significant casualties and displacement.
A judge has ruled that President Donald Trump’s name was illegally added to the Kennedy Center and blocked the administration from closing it for major renovations. Hours later the president said via social media that he would cease involvement in Kennedy Center renovations and return control of it to Congress. Also Friday the president held a White House Situation Room meeting with his advisers as he looks to make a “final determination” on moving forward on a deal to extend a ceasefire with Iran. And former Attorney General Pam Bondi refused to answer questions on Trump’s involvement in the release of case files on Jeffrey Epstein as she defended the administration’s actions in a closed-door interview before House lawmakers.
Israeli troops have entered a southern Lebanese village, pushing deeper into the country amid ongoing conflict. On Friday, Lebanese and Israeli military officials began direct talks at the Pentagon for the first time in decades. A nominal ceasefire went into effect on April 17, but hostilities continue. Lebanese officials seek comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire and a stop to ongoing violence. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least six people. The violence comes as U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative agreement to extend their ceasefire by 60 days. Iran has not confirmed the deal.
U.S. President Donald Trump met with his advisers for about two hours but has not yet made a decision on whether to move forward with a deal to extend the Iran ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said the agreement has not been finalized. Ahead of Friday's meeting, Trump said he was looking to make a “final determination.” A senior administration official later said the roughly two-hour meeting with national security aides had concluded without a decision. The official wasn’t authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
U.S. and Iranian negotiators have reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and start a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program. That's according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter who spoke Thursday to The Associated Press. The official was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Vice President JD Vance on Thursday evening confirmed there was a tentative agreement, but it was unclear if President Donald Trump would approve it. Iran did not immediately confirm any deal with the United States. The tentative agreement comes at a moment when the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran appears to be wavering.
