The U.S. military says it has struck three Iranian oil tankers after Navy warships were targeted with ballistic missiles. The military’s statement Saturday said that an aircraft carrier and a destroyer evaded “multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks” and no U.S. personnel were hurt. Experts note a dangerous escalation after Iran’s previous attacks at sea targeted commercial shipping. The U.S. military said that two Iranian oil carriers were “permanently disabled” and a third unladen one was destroyed. It called the tankers part of a shadow network helping to fund Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard. Iran said it struck six vessels in response.
