New York’s governor has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee an investigation into a woman’s allegations that she was gang raped at a Cornell University fraternity house, saying she had lost faith in the local district attorney’s ability to handle the case. Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday she has signed an executive order appointing the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James as the special prosecutor. Hochul said the attorney general would oversee the investigation and, if warranted, present evidence to a grand jury.

The judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder case has denied a defense motion to find her not guilty due to a lack of evidence. On Tuesday, Clancy's attorney Kevin Reddington tried to persuade Judge William Sullivan that prosecutors had not offered any proof that Clancy had killed her three children. The trial ended in a mistrial. Prosecutors argued there was plenty of evidence, calling Reddington's claim “laughable.” During that trial, Reddington didn’t dispute that Clancy killed the children at the family’s home in 2023. Instead, the defense sought to persuade the jury that the 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse was not criminally responsible because of mental disease, a rare condition called postpartum psychosis.
Tennessee officials have been unable to put Christa Gail Pike to death for a 1995 murder after administering two doses of a lethal drug. A death penalty expert said it was an unprecedented failure. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee late Wednesday halted the remaining scheduled execution for the rest of the year and ordered an outside investigation. Pike's attorneys say she was alive and loudly snoring after the attempted lethal injection and taken by ambulance from the prison. Her attorneys said in court filings that officials gave Pike two doses of pentobarbital. The Tennessee Department of Correction says it followed every step of the state's execution protocol.
A Florida woman has been indicted for allegedly firing a rifle at the California home of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. The grand jury charged Ivanna Lisette Ortiz with attempted murder with an assault weapon. The indictment was unsealed Wednesday, a day after Ortiz was deemed mentally competent to stand trial. Authorities allege that she drove from Orlando to the couple’s Beverly Hills-area property in March and fired at least 20 rounds. Bullets hit a trailer the couple was in at the time and a nursery where their three kids were with their nanny. No one was injured. Ortiz pleaded not guilty and could face life in prison if convicted.
