A federal judge has blocked immigration officers from making warrantless arrests in Southern California unless they determine the person is likely to escape. The order issued Sept. 2 and unsealed Wednesday follows a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Southern California and Los Angeles immigrant advocacy groups during a surge in immigration enforcement last fall. The plaintiffs said officers must document that they determined someone is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained. Similar practices have been blocked by federal judges in other regions.

President Donald Trump has scored a series of wins at the Supreme Court, but he's had some setbacks on key issues, despite the court’s conservative majority. On Monday, the justices rejected his administration’s planned restrictions on mail ballots for the midterm elections. None of the justices he appointed publicly disagreed. Trump criticized the court on social media, expressing frustration over losses on tariffs and birthright citizenship. While the court has allowed Trump to advance much of his agenda, including on immigration and transgender rights, some high-profile losses have rankled him. The court’s recent decisions also suggest a reluctance to intervene in election litigation before the midterms.

Former Southern California basketball player Chad Baker-Mazara is suing the university and coach Eric Musselman after being dismissed from the team in March. The lawsuit was filed Monday. It claims Musselman removed Baker-Mazara to avoid paying the remainder of his NIL contract. It also alleges Musselman made racially charged remarks after a loss to Nebraska. Baker-Mazara accuses USC of breach of contract and other offenses. USC says the dismissal was unrelated to race and plans to contest the lawsuit. Baker-Mazara was a key player for the Trojans and says he received no reason for his dismissal.
