Gov. Jerry Brown faces a midnight deadline to act on six bills to restrict tobacco use in California, including a bill to raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes to 21. Brown must sign, veto or return the bills to the Legislature Wednesday, or they automatically become law on Thursday.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's team has further tweaked his tax plan is hopes of getting it through the Republican-controlled Assembly in the last three days of the legislative session.

Governor Sandoval's plan to increase business license fees has essentially died in the State Assembly. But now he has a new option that will combine his bill with another one to help raise about $500 million for education reforms.

Nevada lawmakers are keeping busy as they face down a deadline to pass bills out of the house where they were first introduced. Legislators must vote bills out of the full Senate or Assembly on Tuesday to keep them alive.
