A new school being built in Sun Valley prompted the meeting in which new school zones would be decided.

If you’re worried about your child’s school bus being too overcrowded, the Washoe County School District says it should have that issue resolved by Friday August 11th. 

The Washoe County School District, Washoe County, cities of Reno and Sparks, as well as the RSCVA discussed proposed plans to build a new school and the repurposing of Procter Hug High School.

Officials say once a school hits 120% capacity it is forced to change it's schedule, either to multi-track/year-round for elementary schools or double sessions in secondary schools. The district is working with schools between 110 and 120 percent to create school overcrowding management plans (SOMPs.)

The Washoe County School District plans to hold several community meetings to discuss overcrowding and repair needs inside area schools. 

At its public meeting on April 26, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to establish “conversion thresholds” that will determine when schools would be automatically changed to Double Sessions during the following school year due to critical overcrowding challenges.

Raising the sales tax to 8.265% will be proposed to the voters via a new ballot measure in an effort to address school overcrowding and repairs needs in Washoe County.

Washoe County voters are being asked to consider $781 million in higher taxes, in order to fund more construction and renovations for schools in the district. The Public Schools Overcrowding and Repair Needs Committee - thinks tax increases will help avoid double sessions, repair older campuses and avoid year-round school calendars.
