Investigators say eight people died when a small plane crashed on its second attempt to land in heavy fog at a remote military airport in Alaska. The National Transportation Safety Board said Friday that the pilots could not see the runway and had to rely entirely on instruments as they tried to land. The plane crashed Thursday near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport. Two pilots and six passengers died. The radar site was built in the 1950s as part of a network designed to provide early warning of a missile attack by the Soviet Union. The Federal Aviation Administration says the twin-engine Cessna 441 took off from Anchorage.
