Authorities have charged the leader of an Indian criminal group in connection with the assassination of a prominent Sikh leader in Canada. The charges are part of a massive law enforcement operation involving agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Thirty-seven defendants are allegedly part of three Indian international crime syndicates tied to various crimes, including murder. Seven defendants remain fugitives. Lawrence Bishnoi is accused of orchestrating the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. The killing strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India. Authorities highlight the operation as a successful example of international cooperation.
