The Supreme Court is siding with a faith-based pregnancy center that raised First Amendment concerns about an investigation into whether it misled people to discourage abortions. The high court’s ruling Wednesday is a procedural victory for First Choice Women’s Resource Centers. It's challenging a New Jersey probe of its practices. The conservative-majority court has given abortion opponents high-profile wins in recent years, most notably the watershed case that overturned the nationwide right to abortion in 2022. First Choice had also drawn support from the American Civil Liberties Union, which supports abortion rights but backed the group’s First Amendment concerns.
The Justice Department has withdrawn subpoenas issued in the investigation of former CIA Director John Brennan, with officials asking for voluntary interviews instead of testimony before a grand jury. That's according to two people familiar with the matter. A small handful of subpoenas were known to have been issued over the weekend for witnesses to appear before a grand jury in Washington. But investigators on Monday evening informed lawyers that the subpoenas were being withdrawn in favor of requests for voluntary interviews, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press to discuss developments in an ongoing investigation.
The Justice Department has subpoenaed several witnesses to testify before a federal grand jury in Washington as part of its investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan. That's according to three people familiar with the matter. The subpoenas represent an effort by the department to press forward with the investigation even as a Florida-based career prosecutor who’d been helping lead the inquiry left the case after expressing doubts about the legal viability of a criminal prosecution. The department last year received a referral from Republicans in Congress alleging that Brennan made false statements before a committee about the preparation of an intelligence assessment about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Brennan denies any wrongdoing.
Singer D4vd has been arrested on suspicion of killing of a 14-year-old girl whose decomposing and dismembered body was found in his Tesla. Police said the singer whose legal name is David Burke is being held without bail and they'll present a case to prosecutors on Monday. Burke had been under investigation by an LA County grand jury in secret. His attorneys said in a statement that he is innocent and was not the cause of the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Investigators say they found the girl's long-dead body in the car in a tow yard in September.
Tiger Woods' attorney plans to fight prosecutors' attempts to subpoena the golfer's prescription drug records. The attorney argues that Woods has a constitutional right to privacy regarding his medications. He asked a judge in Florida this week to hold a hearing to determine if the records are necessary for the investigation. Woods has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence. Authorities say he showed signs of impairment after an accident last month. Prosecutors are seeking his prescription records from a pharmacy in Palm Beach. Prosecutors also demanded the names and locations of any witnesses Woods plans to present in his defense.
