Sumit Rai's son Nathaniel was standing in shallow water when he was pulled into the ocean Saturday by powerful swells that suddenly came ashore at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz. Rai said Wednesday he heard about what happened when he spoke to his kids and his son told him he'd drowned. By the next morning, Rai had watched the video of the rescue that has since caught the attention of President Donald Trump.

Bullets recovered from two bystanders killed during a shootout at a Seattle festival last weekend do not appear to have come from the gun that a 15-year-old arrested at the scene was firing, police said in court documents filed Wednesday. The King County prosecutor’s office filed charges of first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement as well as unlawful possession of a handgun by someone under 18. In a statement supporting the charges, police said the teen was seen firing an untraceable ghost gun into a crowd, but preliminary testing of bullets recovered from two bystanders killed showed they did not match that weapon. Shell casings found at the scene of Sunday’s shooting indicate four weapons were fired during the shootout.

A teenager who killed two students and two teachers in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia has been sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sixteen-year-old Colt Gray had pleaded guilty Friday to charges including murder in the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting that also left several others wounded. Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm handed down the sentence Tuesday after hearing testimony and considering evidence from both sides. Gray was 14 at the time of the shooting and was charged as an adult. Investigators testified that Gray idolized other mass shooters and studied their methods before carrying out the attack.

A judge has ruled there’s enough evidence to send singer D4vd to trial for the killing of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The Los Angeles judge on Monday decided the evidence presented during a preliminary hearing provided probable cause for charges of murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. D4vd, whose legal name is David Burke, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege Burke met Rivas Hernandez when she was 11 and began abusing her at 13. They claim he killed her when she threatened to report him. Burke’s music career was rising before these allegations emerged.

Police say at least three people exchanged gunfire at a food festival near Seattle’s Space Needle over the weekend. One of them died in the violence Sunday during the Bite of Seattle festival. Police believe there were at least three shooters: a 15-year-old arrested in the case; a 19-year-old acquaintance who died at the scene; and at least one other “unknown suspect.” The 15-year-old waived his initial court appearance Monday. Police say the shooting may have been gang-related. Two other people died and at least four were injured.
