Conservationists working around the largest volcano on the Galapagos Islands say they have found 30 giant tortoises partially descended from two extinct species, including that of the famed Lonesome George.

The federal government is taking the unusual step of beginning to sterilize an endangered species it is trying to save.

This week about a dozen desert tortoises will be moving into their new homes in Northern Nevada. The reptiles are being relocated from the southern part of the state and being taken in by homeowners here.
