Genevieve becomes a major Pacific hurricane off Mexico, but no direct threat to land is forecast

Hurricane Genevieve has strengthened into a major Category 4 storm southwest of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean. It's expected to stay well out to sea on a course roughly parallel to the coast. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that swells from the storm are affecting parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast and will likely reach parts of the Baja California Peninsula. Genevieve had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. Farther west, Hurricane Fausto weakened to a Category 1 storm and is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm. Forecasters say it could generate significant surf for parts of the Hawaiian Islands.

Tropical Storm Genevieve has strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center in Miami reports it has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane. Genevieve's center is about 500 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, moving west-northwest. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but swells from the storm are affecting parts of Mexico's southwestern coast. Meanwhile, Hurricane Fausto has weakened to a Category 1 storm. It is moving toward the Hawaiian Islands and could still generate dangerous surf.
