The retirement of Congressman Mark Amodei was a surprise to many. Multiple Republicans are looking to fill his seat, and two names have received the most support: David Flippo and James Settelmeyer.
President Donald Trump has signed a bill funding much of the Department of Homeland Security and ending the longest agency shutdown in history. The bipartisan funding package passed the House earlier Thursday. The Trump administration had warned that temporary funds to pay Transportation Security Administration and other personnel would “soon run out” if Congress failed to act. The shutdown lasted for more than 70 days as Democrats refused to fund Trump’s immigration enforcement operations without changes. Republicans instead adopted a budget resolution to eventually provide $70 billion for immigration enforcement though a separate process on their own, without Democratic help.
The announcement comes one day after Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor.
The White House is releasing details of President Trump’s 2027 budget, including a $1.5 trillion defense spending request.
It is unclear the spending request would have support.
The Nevada Congressional District 2 seat, which serves most of northern Nevada, has 27 candidates looking to fill the role being left behind by Mark Amodei.
Trump removes DHS Secretary Kristi Noem as members of Nevada's congressional delegation respond.
It's the second vote in as many days, after the Senate defeated a similar measure along party lines.
Both the House and the Senate have prepared war powers resolutions for votes this week.
A main theme will be that the country is booming with a rise in domestic manufacturing and new jobs.
