Supporters have packed rooms and chanted her name during appearances that have taken her from Michigan’s deeply Republican Upper Peninsula to university towns in Ohio and Maine. and out west. But the New York congresswoman is looking to prove that her political appeal can translate into victories at the ballot box. With a potential 2028 presidential run on her mind, the results could help shape her future. The number of politically competitive U.S. House seats is shrinking rapidly. There are many reasons. People have stopped splitting their tickets when voting and now usually support one party in all races. More people now live in areas with similarly-minded voters. Swing seats have taken a hit since President Donald Trump kicked off an unusual round of mid-decade redistricting last year. The impact is clear in one North Carolina district that went from competitive to safely Republican. The loss of swing districts adds to polarization because most congressional races are decided in party primaries.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro faced off Friday in their second and final debate ahead of Sunday’s runoff election, but this time with cooler heads than a few days ago. Their move was expected so they can reach out to the few undecided voters left in their tight race. The debate on Brazil’s TV Globo, the most popular broadcaster in the country, lasted two hours and offered candidates a chance to talk about their plans in front of each other. Five days ago, the two exchanged barbs and accusations during the TV Band debate.
President Donald Trump says he ordered the Justice Department lawsuit over Alaska’s U.S. Senate race. Trump's administration has filed a lawsuit to block certification of the Senate race in Alaska if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses. Another candidate with the same name is on the ballot. The lawsuit has sparked concerns about a lengthy battle between the U.S. government and states over election certification. The Department of Justice filed the lawsuit Thursday, demanding Alaska be blocked from certifying a win for Democrat Mary Peltola if the other Sullivan remains on the ballot. The Alaska Supreme Court previously rejected efforts to remove the other Sullivan.
