UPDATE - JULY 28, 02:26 p.m.
The walkaway inmate who prompted a multiagency search Monday has been found and returned to custody on Tuesday afternoon.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office said deputies located 23-year-old Chase Orput at about 1 p.m. near Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks around mile marker 21 after a person at a nearby business recognized him and contacted the Sparks Police Department.
The information helped direct Sparks police officers and Washoe County deputies to the area. Sparks police also deployed a drone to provide aerial support, allowing officers and deputies on the ground to quickly locate and safely take Orput into custody.
Orput was evaluated and provided medical care at the scene before being transported back to the Washoe County Detention Facility. The sheriff's office said he will face additional escape charges.
“We are grateful for the partnership and support provided by the Storey County Sheriff’s Office and the Sparks Police Department throughout this search,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “This incident demonstrates the value of strong partnerships between our region’s law enforcement agencies and the important role our community plays in public safety. We also want to thank the citizen who recognized Mr. Orput and immediately contacted law enforcement. Their quick actions contributed directly to this successful outcome.”
The sheriff's office also thanked its regional law enforcement partners and the community member whose tip helped bring the search to a safe conclusion.
ORIGINAL STORY - JULY 28, 06:10 a.m.
Authorities continue searching for a Washoe County Jail inmate who walked away from a work site on Monday.
The Storey County Sheriff's Office lifted a shelter-in-place order just before 8:30 p.m., about seven hours after 23-year-old Chase Orput walked away from an inmate work crew while assigned to the Lockwood Landfill. He was last seen heading west from the area of Saddle Court and East Mustang Road in the direction of Canyon Way.
Orput is described as white, 6' tall, weighing approximately 185 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black-and-white striped inmate shirt and pants. If that clothing is turned inside out, it looks gray.
Orput is currently serving a sentence on misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to show or maintain proof of insurance.
If you see him, call 911.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office and Storey County Sheriff's Office are working together to locate Orput.
People should expect to see an increased law enforcement presence in the Lockwood area while the search continues.
Secret Witness is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of Orput. You can call or text your anonymous tip to 775-322-4900.
