September 29th is Hunger Action Day. It's meant to bring awareness to food insecurity across the nation and here at home. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada says one in five Nevada children face hunger on a regular basis.

An easy way to bring awareness to the issue is to wear orange.

“We're all wearing orange, and we're asking our friends to wear orange. It's really about awareness of how prevalent hunger is in our community,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, the Director of Marketing for Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “We can do something about it. It's very easy for us to all get together, and our small efforts make a big impact in the community.”

The Food Bank has several community partners that are helping to gather funds and some of the most needed items throughout the entire month, working to ease the burden for those in our community.

It takes a community

Food insecurity can be invisible, which is why simply wearing orange can have such an impact.

“We're helping 143,000 people every single month. That's a big number of people,” said Lantrip. “That means you know people who are food insecure. They work at your work, they go to your school, or your church. You know people who are facing this every day. And that's why we want to make sure that we have enough food for all of them.”
