Susanville Police remind drivers about school safety .jpg

As students head back to class, drivers are being reminded to take extra care around school buses and in school zones.

According to an online post from the Susanville Police Department, drivers should slow down when they see a school bus because children can unexpectedly cross the road. Drivers also should remain especially alert at railroad crossings, where buses are required to stop.

One of the most important rules concerns buses with flashing red lights. Drivers must stop regardless of which direction they are traveling unless a physical barrier or median separates the roadway. A center turn lane does not qualify as a divider.

Drivers also are reminded to follow posted speed limits in school zones.

The department also encouraged parents and other adults to talk with children about safety and situational awareness for emergencies or severe weather during the school year. The department said a few minutes of conversation can help children prepare.
