A married couple who played vital roles in the Great Reno Balloon Race have died.

In a post on their Facebook page, The Great Reno Balloon Race said they mourned the recent, sudden loss of Kim and David Lynch.

They called Kim a pioneer in the ballooning world, saying she lifted spirits and barriers.

She designed one of the first wheelchair-accessible baskets for hot air balloons, according to the post, and served as CEO and head pilot for the Reach for the Stars Hot Air Balloon Foundation.

David was a respected Designated Pilot Examiner who played a vital role in shaping the local ballooning community, the post said.

He helped many pilots in our region earn their pilot certificates.

"Together, Kim and David shared a beautiful life filled with love, adventure, and purpose. Their legacy will continue to soar in the lives they touched and the dreams they made possible," said the post in part. "As we prepare for this year’s event, their absence will be deeply felt."
