The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Special Weather Statement for large portions of western Nevada and the eastern Sierra.

The weather statement is in effect through 5:15 p.m., as strong thunderstorms pass through the region.

Wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour and half-inch hail could be seen from these storms.

Affected areas include Reno, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe, Fallon, Lovelock, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Gardnerville, Virginia City, Boca Reservoir, Twin Lakes, Lahontan Reservoir, Incline Village, Alpine Meadows, Olympic Valley, Stampede Reservoir, Bodie, Benton, Bridgeport, and Prosser Creek Reservoir.

People are advised to seek shelter inside buildings.

Torrential rain from the storm could lead to localized flooding.

Do not drive through flooded roadways.
