The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and 21 other agencies, including the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, which participated in the response to the deadly Castle Peak Avalanche, received certificates of recognition for their efforts on Tuesday.

Nevada County Supervisors presented the certificates.

A group of backcountry skiers and their guides were caught in an avalanche on February 17, resulting in the deaths of nine people.

The response included hundreds of personnel, ski teams, snowmobiles and SnoCats, aerial operations and avalanche mitigation, according to a post on the Nevada County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and its partners rescued all survivors from the mountain on the day of the avalanche and, despite ongoing hazardous weather conditions, continued recovery efforts through February 21.

They returned to the mountain on February 27 to try to recover every possible personal item they could find for the families.
