Sitting in the shade can cool you down, but what you’re sitting on matters too. Cement or pavement heats up much quicker than grass. This is why walking your dog during the heat of the day is discouraged. For fun, try putting two different blocks of ice in two different locations and see which one melts the fastest.
To make the experiment more complicated than shade vs. sun, we put one in the shade with a cement block underneath, and we put the other one in the sun with a silicone tray that can be used in the microwave underneath.
Believe it or not, initially the one in the shade melted much faster than the one in the sun. Cement has a higher thermal capacity, and heats pretty quickly, allowing the ice to melt quickly as well. The silicone is made to resist high temperatures, so the ice melted slower to begin with. The cement block had also been in the sun longer.
Next time, I will put them in two different locations with the same foundation. Eventually the one in the sun caught up to the one in the shade, but it took a while for the silicon to heat up.
Tools needed to do experiment:
Freezer
Silicone trays
Water
Toys that are somewhat heavy, so they won’t float
Steps:
Place toys in trays and fill with water
Place in freezer overnight
Pop ice blocks out of trays and set them each in two different locations
To compare shade vs. sunlight, make sure to put them on top of the same foundation, like grass.
