Heat Advisories go into effect for the Truckee Meadows, down through Douglas County as well as Pershing and Churchill Counties at 8 am on Wednesday going through 8 am Thursday for temperatures exceeding 97 degrees.
A prolonged stretch of triple-digit temperatures is in the forecast this week. It will be warm at night as well. A Heat Advisory goes into effect for the Truckee Meadows on Wednesday, followed by an Excessive Heat Watch from Thursday through Sunday. This will be a hot week, with no relief in sight until the following week. Now is the time to go swimming, as the water will feel refreshing. It will be hot at Lake Tahoe as well, with highs around 90 degrees.
A low over the Pacific Northwest is keeping temperatures slightly cooler on Monday, but the ridge builds back in on Tuesday and sticks around for a while. Last week, the ridge built in from the east. This week, the ridge will also build in from the Pacific. The ridge will block any storms from getting in here, providing us with dry air. Dry air heats up pretty quickly.
Ninety-four degrees is the average temperature for this time of year, and we'll be running between four and eight degrees above average through this coming weekend. Records could be broken this week as well, primarily on Wednesday, with a forecast high of 102 degrees, which is also the record to beat. Records could also be broken on Friday. While it will be hot on Thursday, the record to beat is quite high. Ten is the most consecutive 100-degree days Reno has ever seen since records began.
Areas just east of Reno, like Fallon, will be slightly hotter, with forecast highs reaching 105 degrees on Friday and 104 on Saturday. The heat risk will be moderate for Reno itself throughout much of the week, but it will turn major on Friday. Conditions will be slightly worse in Fallon, with a moderate heat risk on Tuesday and Wednesday, turning major from Thursday through Saturday. The heat risk takes into consideration the daytime high, the overnight low, and the average temperature.
Models are in agreement that the hot weather will stick around all week. We're not expected to break the all-time heat record, but some daily records are within reach.
