While the clouds are a welcomed sight after a busy fire season, they will also hinder any viewing of the partial eclipse set for Thursday night in Northern Nevada. The Lunar Eclipse will reach it’s peak in Northern Nevada and California at 9:13 PM, and beginning at 7:33 PM. The moon will also appear reddish orange as it travels through the inner part of the earth’s shadow. This won’t be a full blood moon, as this will only be a partial lunar eclipse, but very close!
Clouds are already streaming into the Truckee Meadows, making the eclipse hard to see in the Truckee Meadows, but areas to the north or west of Reno will have a better chance of seeing the phenomenon. Besides the clouds, you’ll also want to get away from light pollution to see the eclipse at it’s best. Skies in Reno will unfortunately be mostly cloudy to cloudy at 9 pm. Rain is likely on Friday.
According to NASA, the eclipse will also be visible in Canada, Mexico, South America, western Europe, and Africa. A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is located between the moon and the sun, casting it’s shadow on the moon. A total eclipse occurs when the moon moves directly into the central part of the earth’s shadow, called the umbra, and is fully covered.
