Reno usually sees its last 90 day on September 21st, which ironically happens around the first day of fall. While you may be antsy for cooler weather, it is not unheard of for it to be hot in September. Last year, Reno saw five days in the 90’s and the year before that in 2024 it happened 11 times. This year it’s only happened twice during the month of September.
Highs on Wednesday and Thursday this week will be in the upper 80’s, which is several degrees above average. The 30-year average goes from 1991-2020. In 2022, Reno even saw eight days in the triple digits. So yes, it could be worse.
While it’s been fairly typical in Northern Nevada the last couple of weeks, it’s been so hot in the southeast that they’ve had to cancel games because of the heat. Combining both the temperature and muggy feel to make it feel very hot. Humid air also makes it harder to cool off.
Last year we saw our last 90 degree day on September 17th, and the year before that was on October 3rd. Fall is a transition season, meaning it tends to bounce around from hot to cool, as we get ready for the winter season. Big dips in temperature can also lead to gusty winds.
At least it’s cooling down at night. Reno fell below 50 degrees eight times so far this month, while last year it only happened twice during the month of September. The average low this time of year is 49 degrees. Keep both your summer clothes and jacket handy, as you’ll need one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Dry air heats up quick during the day and cools off quick at night. 106 is the hottest temperature ever recorded at the Reno Airport during the month of September. This happened not too long ago in 2022. In second place is 102 degrees, set back in 2020. So yes, it could be worse.
