Heavy rain is only a state away from Nevada as the remnants of Hurricane Polo are expected to move into the desert southwest this week.
An area of low pressure is also headed towards Las Vegas Monday, keeping a lot of the rain east of Reno.
With that being said, areas along and east of U.S. 95 did see some rain on Monday, with nothing measurable at the Reno Airport.
As the low moves southeast, showers will wrap around the low, with rain bands ahead of the low and behind it. Most of the rain will fall in far eastern Nevada Monday afternoon.
Lows move in a counterclockwise fashion, and sometimes if there is enough moisture, rain can fall on the backside of the low too.
This brings the showers in from the northeast and moves them to the south.
Some light snow is even possible Monday afternoon in Mono County at or above 9,000’, a great example of this is a pinwheel or Ferris wheel with the showers rotating around the low.
Rain totals vary quite a bit, with no measurable rainfall being reported at the Reno Airport.
Some spots did see around an inch of rain over the past 24 hours according to radar, but these are estimates, not official reports.
The heavier bands of rain mainly fell just to the east of Reno over the past 24 hours. In other words, the rain was light overall, with some pockets of narrow bands of heavier rainfall.
Keep in mind, central Nevada is also a ways away from the Reno radar, and totals could be skewed as a result.
Skies will clear Monday night as the low exits Nevada, leaving us with a beautiful day on Tuesday.
However, the remnants of Hurricane Polo will move into the Southwest on Tuesday and combine with the low moving through Nevada to give New Mexico and Arizona very heavy rainfall.
Flood Watches go as far north as parts of Iowa this week, where inches of rain could fall as well.
Our extended forecast is trending drier than average as high pressure takes over beginning on Wednesday, sticking around for a while.
It will be a hot start to October, with highs well into the 80s.
Keep in mind the fall season is known for a mixture of warm and cold days as the atmosphere transitions into the winter season.
