For the first time this year Reno could reach 90 degrees early next week. Records could be broken as well. Remember March? Reno came close to hitting 90 degrees on March 20th with a high of 88 degrees. April however, felt more like winter than March. Now early next week will feel more like June or July than early May. South Lake Tahoe could break records too. The weather whiplash continues. Hands up it’s a wild ride. Click on the image above to see multiple temperature forecasts and records to beat.

Departure from average

The average high for the beginning of May is in the mid 70’s, which puts 90 degrees roughly 15 degrees above normal for this time of year. Lows will be mild as well, reaching the lower 50’s. This will be a good stretch of summerlike weather. The ice cream forecast calls for one ice cream treat through Saturday and two ice cream treats Sunday through Tuesday.

Ice cream forecast

Back in March Reno already hit 80 degrees seven times, and Reno will at least be in the 80’s through next Thursday. South Lake Tahoe could even reach 80 degrees next week as well. This normally doesn’t happen until June 10th.

Reno did not reach 90 degrees until May 28th last year, and June 5th the year before that. The earliest on record is April 22nd in 2012 and the 30 year average is May 30th.

Forecasted highs

Forecast confidence grows as more models and ensembles agree, which is indeed happening. The models are changing a degree or two here or there, but what looks likely is that it will be hot for early May. It’s a close call to see if we break records, and if we do it will likely be by a degree or two. Records could be broken in Reno as early as Sunday.
