Flash flooding in Elko County

It’s been an active week for eastern Nevada thanks to monsoonal moisture wrapping around an area of high pressure. Heavy rain lead to localized flash flooding in the Jackpot area on Wednesday. Jackpot is located near the Idaho border.

By looking at photos posted on the Elko Fire Protection District’s Facebook Page, there appears to be a lot of mud in that area as well. According to officials, there were no reports of major injuries. Flash flooding is not something to take lightly. Never drive through standing water, as it is oftentimes deeper than it appears. According to NOAA, while heat is usually the number one weather related cause of death, flooding is number two.

Flash flooding in Elko County Wednesday

While drier air is moving into western Nevada Thursday afternoon, there is still some monsoonal moisture in eastern Nevada and Utah. The threat for thunderstorms extends into the weekend for Elko County. Localized flash flooding can’t be ruled out. As the ridge expands westward late this weekend, chances for storms expands westward as well. There is only a ten percent chance in the Sierra on Saturday, but a better chance early next week.
