Fall can feel like temperature whip lash with temperatures bouncing around from the 70’s to the 90’s in September. The average high this time of year is in the upper 80’s and last we week we were only in the 70’s, but the next few days will be closer to average with highs in the 90’s. Cooler air then moves back in over the weekend.
Looking back over the past ten years or so, Reno usually sees its last 90 degree day towards the middle of September. Last year we saw our last 90 degree day in Reno on September 17th and the year before that it was on October 3rd. In 2022, the last time we hit 90 degrees in Reno was September 27th. We even made it up to 100 degrees eight times in September of 2022. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen again, but I don’t think it will.
Going all the way back to 2014, roughly 15-45% of September we were in the 90’s in Reno. Last year it happened 17% of time, but in 2022 it happened almost half of the month. This year we’re seeing a mixed bag of temperatures, but starting off cooler than average. The next few days will be several degrees above average, but not record breaking. The record to beat on September 8th is 101 degrees, and on the 9th the record is 98 degrees. We’ll likely miss the record on the 10th by several degrees as well.
The heat won’t stick around for long as another upper level low digs south on Friday into the weekend. This will drop temperatures into the 70’s and kick up our winds. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40’s. 106 is the all time record in September for Reno, set back on September 6th of 2022.
