Police: Motorcyclist Expected to Make Full Recovery After Collision

Reno Police say over the past five days, officers arrested 23 people for suspicion of driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

Of the arrests made by Reno PD from June 30th to July 4th, police say 19 people were arrested for DUI alcohol, 3 were for suspicion of DUI with Marijuana, and 1 was for suspicion of Methamphetamine.

Two of the people arrested were involved in crashes which did not result in any major injuries being reported.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show that at least 4,000 drivers are killed each year with drugs in their system.   NHTSA also reported that 57% of fatally injured drivers had alcohol and/or drugs in their system – 17% had both.

The Reno Police Department wants to remind our community that impaired driving can be deadly, and costly.  If you are convicted for first offense DUI alcohol or drugs you could receive the following fines from the courts:

First DUI conviction:

•         Jail sentence of 2 days to 6 months OR 96 hours of community service.

•         Fine of $400 to $1,000.

•         Mandatory attendance at DUI School.

•         Possible order to attend a substance-abuse treatment program.

•         Driver’s license revoked 90 days or 1 year if you refuse evidentiary testing.

•         SR-22 Certificate of Liability Insurance for 3 years.

The total costs for your first DUI with hiring an attorney, court fees, insurance and DMV fees could be as high as $10,000 or $11,000.  Hiring a private attorney alone could cost upwards of $4,500 or more if you cause injury or death as a result of impaired driving.  Any additional offenses for DUI can result in more serious fines, and possibly even prison.

Reno Police want to encourage everyone in our community who believes they are too impaired to drive from either alcohol or drugs to not drive.  Designate a sober driver, call a friend or family member, use public transportation, or call a taxi or Uber.
