Boating and Fishing Sales on the Rise

A lot can change in 12 months.

"This is the time of year to turn your attention away from school and work and become a fisherman," said Chris Healy of the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

With a fuller Truckee River, it's the right year to do it too.

"There's been a good demand for recreation, I'm there with them," said Healy.

Healy says fishing licenses are up this year. The Department of Wildlife has been selling about 15 licenses a day at their office alone.

"I can't wait, I'm going to go buy my fishing license, you shamed me into it,' said Healy.

People are getting their boating licenses too.

"This season we've seen an increase in boaters, because last year water levels it was hard to get out and have fun in the water. This year, we've noticed a good increase," said Cristando.

Employees at West Marine in Reno are hoping to beat last years sales. They seem pretty optimistic.

"We are projecting to have a great year," said Cristando.

Boating cleaning supplies are a popular item. Boats can get rather dirty if they haven't been used in a while. Also, a couple different ways to fish are becoming more popular, too.

"Kayak fishing is very popular, and paddle boarding fishing is very popular too," said Cristando.

Despite a low water supply in 2015, we were able to save quite a few fish.

"We should have enough water to carry those fish over and satisfy our anglers all the way through fall," said Healy.

But they're antsy to get in the water soon.

"I didn't even get to to fish in the Truckee River last year and that kind of really depressed me," said Healy.

However, with the glass more than half full this year, we have something to be happy about.
