Pandemic unemployment benefits ended on Labor day, which could result in a change in hiring trends. The Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce commented on what it has observed since millions of people stopped receiving the extra cash.
"We've seen a lot of people wanting to get back in the workforce, but they're kind of in the driver's seat now. So they're being pickier on the types of jobs that they want." said Connor Naisbitt, the director of operations for the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce.
On Tuesday, the chamber of commerce hosted a free job fair to help connect its members with job seekers. Teresa Siboni was one of 60 employers that set up a table at the event. She hopes to find someone who wants a career. She is the regional director of operations in Northern Nevada for Absolute Dental.
Siboni said, "I myself, I started with no experience at all whatsoever, with Absolute Dental. AndI started as a biller and then treatment coordinator, office manager and now I run the Northern Nevada region. So we like to train people. We like to teach them and bring them in."
Siboni said there is an urgent need for dental assistants, and a shortage of those types of workers could impact operations.
"If we don't have them, I don't have assistants I don't have people to do their jobs, and doctors can't do their jobs." she said. "We are operating very short staffed and we just have to minimize what we're doing. We do have to cut down on the amount of patients we can see."
Although Siboni said the amount of job fair attendees was underwhelming, she is still determined to find the right people to join their team. She said it's just a matter of time and patients. She also said the flow of applicants may come in week or months after unemployment benefits ceased.
D1 Fitness was another participant of Tuesday's job fair. It opened in January of this year, and the owner, Jason King, they've been experiencing a need for workers too.
"In the beginning we had a lot of applicants. I think being new, people were excited to see what we were, what we did. And it was pretty easy to find people in the beginning. But over the past few months its been tougher, we've had some positions we had to cover with people who are already on staff."
The gym is currently looking for front desk staff and personal trainers that could earn about $12 to $15 depending on experience.
