Johns Hopkins University has reported that California is the first state to record 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases.
The state has reached 2,010,157 total infections since January. More than 23,000 people have died from the virus and more than 18,000 are hospitalized. Many of the state's intensive care units are filled.
Health officials say a new outbreak that is straining California's medical system is due to gatherings at Thanksgiving.
Officials are asking people to avoid social gathering for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
