The International Camel & Ostrich Races return to the Comstock this weekend. However, they'll be held in a completely new venue.
Storey County Commissioners unveiled the new Virginia City Arena and Fairgrounds on Wednesday. The new arena can seat more than 3,000 people, nearly doubling the capacity of the old arena.
At a cost of a little more than $200,000, organizers say the new arena will make the races more comfortable and enjoyable for attendees.
The races, now in its 56th year, attract people from all over the country. And it's a boost for the local economy.
"It brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars," said Deny Dotson, Director of the Virginia City Tourism Commission. "It's vital to our economic stability and that our merchants up town get the traffic."
