Carson City Sheriff's Office Cracks Down on Crosswalk Violations

Most people would like to avoid dealing with a traffic citation, during the holiday season. And the Carson City Sheriff's Office is keeping that in mind, while conducting a crosswalk enforcement detail.

"Our theme for today is 'Pedestrians have families, too,' and we would like to see them spend the holidays with their families as well," Sgt. Scott McDaniel, Carson City Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies are hoping Tuesday's operation, on Carson Street, will help prevent future pedestrian accidents. Those types of accidents are declining in northern Nevada, but Sheriff Ken Furlong says there are still too many.

"It just seems like every time we have one, we don't get a chance to catch our breath before we have another one," Furlong said.

Deputies wear bright orange clothing, and cross the street. Any driver that does not yield to them, gets pulled over by one of the patrol units, set up on both sides of the street.

"We really don't want to hand out citations at Christmas time but we do recognize that one of the biggest factors, here, is we have distracted driving going on," Furlong said.

Today's operation resulted in 29 people being stopped, including 21 that failed to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Two stops were made for following too closely, 4 for speeding, and 2 for cell phone use.
