Churchill Sheriff Identifies Woman Killed Monday in Fallon

Churchill County Sheriff Ben Trotter has identified the woman fatally shot in the Churchill County Cemetery in Fallon on Monday afternoon.

The sheriff says around 3 p.m. authorities were notified by Larry Small's sister that he had called her, and said that he shot his wife, Kathy Small.

Sheriff Trotter tells Channel 2 that the Smalls arrived at the cemetery for an unknown reason and that's when the shooting happened. He says Small shot Kathy with a .22 caliber gun twice – in the back and in the back of the head.

He adds there was no sign of foul play concerning why they originally went to the cemetery, and that they believe she went willingly to that location.

Sheriff Trotter believes Kathy was intoxicated at the time of the incident since a bottle of Black Velvet Whisky was found in her hand.

Afterward a ping of Larry Small's phone, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers were able to locate 63-year-old Larry on I-80 in Humboldt County near Mile Marker 168. After following his vehicle for a short time, they say Small then got out of his truck and shot himself. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Sheriff Trotter tells us Larry had two active arrest warrants, including one for battery with a deadly weapon. He also says Small was previously incarcerated on a different weapons-related crime that involved Kathy in 2006.

He also told us he didn't know the exact status of the Small's relationship or marital status, other than they had a long on-again/off-again relationship.
