A local rescue dog is in the running to be on the cover of a calendar sponsored by Furever USA. Two-year-old Gidget was born without front legs, but that hasn't slowed her down.
"She loves people, loves dogs, loves her ball; that's what she is trying to get to right now," said owner Cindy Vance on a recent trip to Ranch San Rafael's dog park. Cindy met her through local rescue group Dog Town Rescue.
"I saw her on Facebook last October and fell in love with her," Vance said. "I watched her online but it wasn't until February that we adopted her, because it is a commitment."
Despite her disability, Gidget is unstoppable. She even has a custom cart to help her get around.
"It allows her to go on hikes," Vance said. "One day, we kind of say, she'll go up Mt. Rose, but I'm not sure about that yet. She goes about a mile, mile and a half right now,"
She fits right in with her new family.
"She gets in and out the dog door and now she gets a lot of one-on-one attention. She's got a rottweiler brother and a mixed sister - all rescues - and they have a good time and they love each other. And I sometimes get a space in the bed."
Her unstoppable attitude has made her a fan favorite on the calendar page so far. And the hope is, her story will inspire others to open their hearts and homes to special needs pets.
"Just don't be afraid to rescue a handicapped dog," Vance said. "They can be a lot of joy, but be aware they are a lot of work. They are going to need extra time, but they're really rewarding because she is happy and it makes me happy to see her happy."
Voting for that spot ends at Midnight on Monday.
