Families Testify in Bean Penalty Phase

An emotional day of testimony in the penalty phase of the Jeremiah Bean trial as the jury listened to the convicted killer's family members.

An emotional Luz Bean took the stand sitting across the room from her son who will either spend the rest of his life in prison or receive the death penalty.

"Why did Jeremiah did it? I don't know. But all I ask is please forgive us. Don't put that grudge on us because of Jeremiah. We are not bad parents."

Bean killed Bob and Dorothy Pape, Eliazar Graham, Lester Leiber and Angie Duff on Mother’s Day weekend, more than two years ago.

"I never thought that my own son would murder five people."

The jury watched a slide show showing Bean as a happy child, before he went down a path of drug abuse and gang involvement.

"Jeremiah, when he was a really good person but when he was drunk and did drugs, he was a different person."

His younger brother says he and Jeremiah had a rough and sometimes violent relationship with each other.

"I love him because he is my brother but for so long in my life, I just hated him,” says Nicholas Bean.

Still - Nicholas says he would like to continue a relationship with him and hopes the jury will spare his life.

"I know what he did but...I want to see him live and visit because I was never there for him, before."

Family members of some of the victims also took the stand giving impact statements about how Bean's actions have affected their lives and their loved ones.

"I hope that as the years go by, he sees the faces of the people he murdered over and over again," says Terry Pape, Bob and Dorothy's daughter-in-law.

"Five people lost their lives to the hands of a murderer. My family and kids will not get to spend holidays together for the rest of our lives with the man we loved," says Larry Leiber, Lester Leiber's son.

"Compassion is the word, commonly used by the defense. However, I'd like to ask how much compassion was considered when the decision was made to murder Lester Leiber," says Stephanie Shenefelp, Lester Leiber's daughter.

Family members of some of the victims also took the stand giving impact statements about how bean's actions have affected their lives and their loved ones.

Proceedings wrapped up after 6 different people gave their statements.

Court will start up again Thursday at 10 a.m
