Our Someone 2 Know is a urologist - a physician who specializes in the diseases of the bladder, urinary system and male reproductive tract.

Dr. Ross Anderson is a physician at Urology Nevada in Reno. He also travels to Uganda to perform much needed surgeries and to train medical professionals in that country.

It's a very long flight to from Nevada to Uganda. A trip worth the effort for Dr. Anderson - and absolutely essential for patients in this east African country.

“It is a very underserved country from a medical perspective in general, but also specifically with sub-specialty care like urology.”

A country, says Anderson, with nowhere near enough care providers. So, he and other doctors make annual trips. “The focus is on training their skills so they can stay where they live in Uganda and actually take care of the population.”

In all parts of the world, urinary problems are common.

Dr. Anderson, along with nearly two dozen doctors and practitioners at Urology Nevada, see both men and women. “We focus on urology which is anything from the adrenal gland, to the kidney, bladder, prostate…”

Plus, treatment for related cancers.

While these diseases and complications might not be a popular topic of conversation, there are plenty of patients in need in northern Nevada.

“A lot of it has to do with quality of life. How do you make someone's quality of life better when they can't pee very well? Or, they have problems with urinary leakage. These are all things that we deal with all the time here.”

Dr. Anderson also has an additional specialty - trauma and reconstructive urology.

“Usually scar tissue, whether that's scar tissue in the ureter which is the drainage shoot for the kidney or the urethra, there are ways to surgically fix these areas.”

Anderson takes those skills to Uganda, and plans to continue doing so on an annual basis. Stateside, at Urology Nevada, the doctor performs more than 500 surgeries per year and would like to help even more patients.

“Our practice like many is looking at ways that we can help bring access outside of just Reno, here.”
