A fire has damaged several units at the Smithridge Park Condominiums in central Reno.Â
Crews responded to the complex on Smithridge Drive, south of Peckham Lane shortly after 9:30 p.m, Wednesday night. When the Reno Fire Department arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the buildings.Â
According to Reno Fire Battalion Chief Mark Winkelman, witnesses described a loud popping noise that sounded like an explosion.Â
Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire because of a quick response within 3 minutes to the scene.Â
Three apartment units are deemed unlivable because of the extent of the damage. And the fire also completely destroyed six carports along with multiple vehicles.Â
Residents were evacuated from the building and there were no injuries.Â
"It looks like everyone was pretty smart about getting out. They got to a safe place away from the apartments, to the other side of the complex. And everyone stayed safe," said Winkelman.Â
There is no word on what started the blaze. And several people will be displaced because of the damage.Â
Firefighters expect to be on scene until early in the morning as they clean up.
