Fire Safety Tips This Winter

The Reno Fire Department is encouraging everyone to start thinking about preventing fires this winter. It's a common misconception that fires won't occur as much during winter, but colder weather doesn't necessarily mean there are fewer opportunities for a fire to occur.

One of the tips came on Sunday during daylight saving time. The Reno Fire Department says they use this time as a reminder for people to change the batteries inside smoke detectors.

Fire Captain Adrian Leasure says changing the battery inside smoke detectors is one of the best ways to make any home fire safe.

“It's the easiest and best way to make your home fire safe. It's proven to be very effective to save lives, it's easy to do and doesn't cost a whole lot of money,” says Leasure.

Colder weather also brings common fire dangers into the household. Captain Leasure says space heaters can cause fires if clothes are left on top of them and candles should never be left unattended. Also, fireplace ash should be disposed of in the proper manner.
