First Friends of Washoe County Library Book Sale Starts This Weekend

The first Friends of Washoe County Library book sale of the year starts this weekend. Members get a sneak peek the Friday before it opens to the public; and it's easy to join the club.

"You can become a member at the front desk, where I will personally greet you, starting at about 1:30 on Friday afternoon," said Dan Erwine, President of Friends of Washoe County Library. "They open the doors at 3:00 p.m. and there's this mad rush with the line going outside the Reno Town Mall practically over to the Atlantis."

There are some first editions and special collections here, but for the most part, its a buck a book and the money goes to a good cause.

"Your dollar buying your mystery paperback goes directly to support the library system, no question about it, every penny of it," Erwine said.

Every year the Fiends raise more than $100,000 for things like books, technology, and special programming at libraries across the county. Now they're working on other partnerships with the Nevada Museum of Art and the Fleishmann Planetarium.

"That's something we've wanted to do for a long time and thanks to two of our board members, it's become a reality," Erwine said. "There is so much activity in nonprofits, in arts and science organizations here and everywhere, and we're all so glad to be able to help each other out."

Most of the books at the sale are donated - so you never know what you might find. They also take DVD's, cassettes and videos at the red door behind the Reno Town Mall.

"On Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until noon, go to the back, look for the red door and hit the buzzer and someone will come take your donation," Erwine said.
