Flooding Causes Damage at Sparks Schools and Parks

A storm on Tuesday left many areas in Sparks flooded and damaged by water. Schools and parks in the area began conducting clean-up efforts as soon as they could.

Rain water made its way into Jerry Whitehead Elementary School and damaged the carpet in 11 classrooms. The school's playground will also need to be remodeled for damages before school begins this fall.

Christopher Cobb with the Washoe County School District says before remodeling takes place, cleanup crews are preparing for more rain in the coming days.

"We're trying to be very prudent here, we have a sandbag crew on site and what we're doing is putting Visqueen on all the doors and windows in the back where it came in and sandbagging those until we get through this unsettled weather pattern, just so we can protect the rest of this investment that we have,” says Cobb.

The school district says they are very fortunate the school wasn't hosting any type of summer classes or outside organizations. However, other outdoor activities like little league baseball will have to make some adjustments in Sparks.

Wet grass and mud at the Shadow Mountain baseball fields, will move practice to Golden Eagle Regional Park.

Little league president Steven Howe says while the flooding is a minor inconvenience, the kids and coaches will find a way to play.

"It's a teachable moment that sometimes we have to be mobile and we have to respect what we've got from our parks and rec department and our city and our public works and we've got to be as mobile as they are,” says Howe.

The City of Sparks has been working throughout the day to have all parks and recreational centers cleaned as soon as possible.
