Truckee during the holidays is a sight to see.
"Truckee is a fabulous place," said Doug Ruthnick from Concord, Calif., who spends time there over the holidays. Â "The lights, they decorate it really well; I really enjoy coming downtown. Â Truckee is a great hamlet."
But parking in the downtown area can be a challenge this time of year. Â That's why the Town of Truckee, Truckee Tahoe Airport District, Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District, Squaw Valley-Alpine Meadows, Northstar California, Truckee Downtown Merchants Association, and local businesses partnered together to bring the holiday shuttle service back to town for the third year running.
"Once again we're doing the free holiday shuttle and it goes to every subdivision in Truckee," said Julia Tohlen, Program Manager of the Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association. Â "So people can get picked up from right near their house and dropped off in downtown Truckee from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m."
It's convenient for those that live or are staying near town for the holidays.
"It's wonderful," Ruthnick said. Â "We took it for Truckee Tuesdays and it worked out really well so we decided to try it tonight. Â It showed up right on time, they got us here, we didn't have to park - Â can life get better? Â No, it can't!"
And convenient for skier traffic from the local resorts.
Squaw and Northstar are participating so anyone at the resorts can pick it up also," Tohlen said.
The service started the day after Christmas and has been a big hit so far.
We're just trying to get people out of their cars," Tohlen said. Â "We're trying to ease the congestion through Truckee. Â It's a crazy time of year and there's a lot of people so we're trying to make things easier and ease the negative effects on the area for both people and the environment."
It runs every night through New Year's so those that come downtown to celebrate will have a safe ride home.
