"Granite Construction has learned of an instance involving an unknown third-party who contacted our client, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), and falsely represented themselves as being a company representative. Granite is doing everything possible to assist the RTC and the FBI in their investigation."

Reno, NV (November 2, 2016) – On October 27, 2016, the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County discovered that it was the victim of an email fraud scheme. The incident involved an email purportedly sent from one of the RTC’s vendors requesting an electronic funds transfer. RTC honored the supposed vendor’s request and processed the electronic payment in the amount of $1.4 million. The fraudulent transfer was limited to a single payment for one vendor.
Upon learning of the situation, RTC immediately reached out to federal law enforcement and its bank. These activities are ongoing, and RTC is working with law enforcement and its financial institution to aggressively investigate this incident and attempt full recovery of the funds.
The incident did not impact RTC’s systems, and these systems remain secure.
